Recovery Guidelines

ALL AUSSIE 4X4 CLUB ABIDES BY THE FOLLOWING RECOVERY GUIDELINES.

The trip leader will be in charge of all recovery operations, unless delegated otherwise by the trip leader. All other vehicles must be well clear of the operation.

Objective:

To ensure the safe recovery of a stranded vehicle without compromising the safety of people involved and other bystanders. Also to prevent damage to property and the environment.

Preliminary Checks:

All recovery equipment must be inspected and deemed safe for use before use and used within the manufacturers guidelines.

All people in the area should be in a safe position incase failure of recovery equipment occurs especially children. The parents or guardians are responsible for ensuring the safety of their children.

Recovery points should be solid and able to withstand the forces that are to be applied. If the point looks unsuitable an equaliser strap can be used to spread the load over two points.

If a vehicle is about to be engaged in an activity that is likely to result in a recovery (big bog hole/ river crossing etc) recovery points will be identified prior to the vehicle attempting. If necessary straps can be hooked up before the vehicle attempts to cross. This is to reduce the chance of water ingression and damage to electrics etc.

Recovery Operation:

Prior to any recovery a solid plan of attack shall be discussed and implemented ie; safe zones, equipment used, how far to drive once the vehicle is free etc.

Constant communications shall be maintained between all involved in a recovery via radio, signals or voice.

In more complicated recoverys it may be necessary to appoint one or more supervisors to alert those involved in the recovery of any new hazards that arise during the recovery operation such as possible panel damage, puncture prone tyre of anything else that could result in damage or injury.

If any members involved in the recovery including supervisors shout out "STOP" all people shall come to a halt and take the time to re-assess the situation.

If a recovery has had a few failed attempts it may be necessary to take a step back and see if anything can be done to aid recovery such as rock packing etc or even change the plan of attack.

Once a vehicle is successfully recovered all equipment shall be inspected prior to being returned to the owner.

Conclusion:

By following these few simple guidelines we can greatly reduce the chance of injury and damage and maximise the time we spend out on the tracks!
